5/1 HW#2 Writing Project Reflection

This project is one that would have greatly benefited from being a face-to-face situation. However, in today's business world it's often impossible to meet physically with important team members, so this was good practice for a similar state of affairs.

Communication within the group could have been better, but it could have been worse, and in the end we got the job done. I agree with Ken that losing a group member did disrupt things, and with that and other factors we didn't do the best we could have. But, again, this is good practice. If we face a similar situation in the future, we'll at least have an idea of how not to deal with it, and thereby some idea of what would be a better way to handle the situation.

The subject of the writing project was excellent. I feel we chose the right prompt, I got a lot out of considering the situation and my response to it. It's really interesting to see how clear your answer to an ethics problem becomes once you actually start answering, even if your initial reaction to the question is ambiguous.

4/10 HW#3 Response to Question 3

Optimism is all very well and good. I think it's an important quality for individuals to cultivate and exercise in their day-to-day lives. However, while focusing on and hoping for the best-case scenario is helpful for individuals, in a professional context one has to be prepared for the worst-case and middle-case scenarios as well. In particular, when new technology is involved, there is always trial and error, and sometimes the technology may fail entirely. It is foolish and dangerous to plan only for everything working out perfectly, as that will leave everyone stranded when things inevitably do not work out. Of course it's a good idea to present your technology in the best possible light, but it is critical to maintain a sense of reality, and not advertise above and beyond what you are sure you can deliver.

Interview of Individual in your Profession

Better late than never. I interviewed a graphic/web designer friend of mine, Tony Parilla.

4/3 HW #7: Deadline Reflection

This week was very productive for me. The f2f meeting was especially helpful, as the requirements for the WP #3 were made much clearer to me. I now have a much improved understanding of the project, and I will be able to use that understanding to make a significantly better final draft. I'm grateful that Ken brought up the issue of the cover memo on his blog, as well. Between that and the class meeting, I feel I know exactly where to go with my revision of WP #3.
